Story Construction Co. is a Merit-Shop, full service general contractor. We have
years of experience in hard bid, negotiated, design-build and construction management
methods of delivery for projects.
Story, through its predecessor James Thompson & Sons, had its beginnings in
1934 when Jim Thompson left a Minnesota-based general contractor to start his own
company in Ames, Iowa. His sons, Russell and Kenneth rounded out the company’s early
workforce. During the next several decades the company was able to thrive and has
grown from that three-man family operation to an employee-owned company.
 From
a beginning that focused on publicly owned, hard-bid projects, Story has established
itself successfully in the private sector as well. Story completes projects ranging
from general office buildings to specialized industrial facilities. Our markets
include healthcare, senior living, manufacturing & warehouse/distribution, food
processing, water and wastewater treatment plants, education, and churches. In addition
we have in-house design capabilities, making Story a true design-build firm and
providing single-source responsibility on projects. The diversity of our projects
is a testament to the wide range of skills within our company and our people.
